MISSION: POSSIBLE

"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead I have called you friends, for everything I have learned from my Father I have made known to you."

-John 15:15

"Some of us feel we have a certain destiny, a certain lot in life, but we never know what horizons will be opened to us."

-former City Missionary George Harris
Honolulu Advertiser, September 1, 2001

For generations, Central Union Church has been on the forefront of local, national, and international mission outreach. Our sentiments are summarized in our vision statement:

"We at Central Union Church, responding to the call to be God's people, envision our church as being at the center of, and a catalyst for, safe and healthy city neighborhoods, neighborhoods that minister to forgotten people, places and causes, neighborhoods that love, nurture and protect all residents, especially those currently being overlooked. Led by the Holy Spirit, these neighbors, our brothers and sisters from the community, will enter into and renew the life of Central Union Church. Under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we will all work and worship together and thus be transformed."

Our church offers many exciting and rewarding ways to put faith into action for those in need in our community:

  • Our Youth Ministry with the Boys and Girls Club includes tutoring, service projects, and our Smart Moves drug and alcohol prevention program.
  • Women in Transition, in association with Fernhurst YWCA, includes job preparation and monthly luncheons.
  • Our Homeless Ministry includes weekly worship, meal service, and Bible study.
  • The CUC Food Pantry collects food and other items at each worship service on the first and second Sunday of each month. Your donations help our neighbors at the Waikiki Health Center, the UCC Transition House, and Central Union Church's Winners For Life after-school youth program. • Habitat for Humanity brings church members and friends together to help build and rehabilitate housing.
  • Christmas White Gifts in December

Ala Moana Park Mission: Park of Grace and Praise

This weekly Central Union Church program reaches out to fill the needs of Ala Moana Park homeless residents in Honolulu. On Thursday evening shared worship with park residents is topped off with a cooked dinner prepared by Central Union Church volunteers on the mauka side of Magic Island. It was the youth of Central Union Church who originated this ministry. Our City Missionary, George Harris started by walking the park with a thermos of coffee to share and a heartfelt willingness to listen. Our volunteers come mostly from the Family Life Committee, though others from other committees and boards pitch in to help.

The Honolulu Advertiser in September 2001 stated that the purpose of this mission is "to call our church people out in the community, to get involved in a substantive way - Worship is the great equalizer. We sit together, all equal before the altar, before God - We all get fed in this - people have dedicated a lot of time, and it has changed them."
