FOR ELECTION BY THE CONGREGATION AT THE

MAY 6, 2012 ANNUAL MEETING

The Church Council unanimously approved the following Nomination Slate for Church Council Officers and
At-Large Council Members
recommended by
the Nominations and Governance Committee.

On recommending the Nominees,
the Committee noted
that the Slate represents a broad cross section
of the demographics of the Church.

Under the Church’s Bylaws, Church Members have until
March 17th to make additional nominations
by written notice to the Council Secretary
signed by at least forty (40) Church Members
and the Member or Members being nominated.

to purchase a new console piano in Atherton Chapel.

We'll be happy to accept donations during
the week before the sale.

We'll also take, at any time, donations of:
pots, soil, cuttings, or other gardening supplies.

Have a green thumb?

We are looking for people to "adopt" a plant
(or two or more!) and nurture it until our sale in March.

Evelyn Hao can also use help with organizing,
including labeling and placing the plants.

In addition, we would appreciate the use of a truck
for picking up donations.

Sunday Morning Parking

Our front lawn project is nearly complete.

Although the grass is filling in nicely, some areas,
especially the the east end of the lawn,
are still not strong enough to handle cars.
This means that parking is at a premium.
This can cause inconvenience on Sunday mornings.
This is where you can help.

If you can volunteer once a month
(approx 8:30 AM - 9:00 AM) to help direct cars,
it would be an great help to the church.

Our eclectic shop is abuzz with customers, donors and visitors.

If you have a few extra hours a week,

We are always delighted when folks,
such as our scholarship recipients,
volunteer for the day just to say "thank you."

There's a task to fit everyone's talents and gifts.

Senior Minister Search

The Council was fortunate to have many people interested in serving on this committee and we thank you all. After due consideration of the qualities needed to serve and to ensure a broad cross-section of our church community, the Council has selected the members of the Senior Minister Search Committee. They are: Evelyn Hao, Scott Ballentyne, John Jacobson, Kent Reinker, Gregory Sato, Francis Sapigao, Bert Turner, Elspeth Kerr, Eloise Lee, Jane Nagel, May Oshiro and Ruth Stepulis. I have appointed Evelyn Hao to chair this committee.

This committee has a long road ahead. Please give them your support.

As part of this minister search process, we will utilize the Spire, our website, and the Sunday bulletin to get information out to our Congregation. Updates will be given monthly in our Spire so please look out for them. We also plan to utilize the bulletin board located in the hallway to the administration building. If you have any questions regarding this process, please first look to these forms of information. Please also feel free to contact members of the Church Council, the search committee, or write in care of the Church Council Chairperson.

On February 1, I began my interim at Central Union Church. It is the second time I have been here as your interim senior minister. While the faces are familiar and the grounds and buildings are pretty much the same, the church has changed. The church is the Body of Christ that is called Central Union Church. The job of the interim is to work with the church as it goes through a transition and to prepare the church to receive a new pastor.

As your interim minister, I will perform all the duties of the senior pastor while working with the church to come to terms with its recent history, to envision what the church wants to be and do in the future, to strengthen the laity, and to deepen the covenant with the United Church of Christ.

The season of Lent begins on the last Sunday of February. Lent is the forty days before Easter not counting the Sundays. It is a season of self-examination, prayer, and fasting. The word “Lent” comes from the Latin word that means “to lengthen”. The Lenten Season points to the increasing daylight hours which spring brings (adapted from the UCC Book of Worship).

I invite you to come and worship and to be the Body of Christ.

Every woman who is a member of Central Union
is a member of the Women's League.

We invite you to explore the ways

"To unite the women of Central Union in Christian fellowship through worship, service, education and social activities

as it serves the cause of Christ in the Church,

Beneficiaries of our Ministry

Through our financial giving, many ministries are supported:

(mission around the world)

• The UCC Local Church Ministries
(mission around the USA)

• The Woman's Board of Missions for the Pacific Islands
(an affiliate of the Hawaii Conference UCC)

• Local Ministries Include:

Each year 19 scholarships are carefully given
to students for college and graduate school tuition.

What We Do

The CUC Thrift Shop is the major source of our funding.

Every Wednesday and Saturday you will find cheerful and helpful volunteers keeping the Thrift Shop running successfully.

Each Second Saturday of the month the Executive Board meets to maintain a high quality operation.

Every May and December General Membership meetings of inspiration, education, fun, fellowship and business are held and open to all.

Our church's history goes back nearly 125 years.
In 1988, the history was published in book form.

Now we can make the history available
to an even wider audience via digital publishing.

World Ark gifts totaled $4,000.
Twenty or so were donations for specific animals.

Who are we?

We are the youth of Central Union Church.

We consist of all young people between grades 6 thru 12.

We are a loving and accepting group that celebrates
a diverse range of young people.

What do we do in the church service?

We meet each Sunday and attend the 9 AM service.

In this service grades 6 and 7 are acolytes (light the candles) and grades 8-12 are Worship People.

A Worship Person does the call for the offering and
offers the prayer to bless the gifts given.

All others are assigned teams to collect offering.

Our older youth are given the opportunity to read scriptures on the first Sunday of each month.

Once a month we sing at the 9:00 AM service.

When do we meet?

We meet every Sunday unless otherwise noted.

At 9:15 AM the 8th graders go to Confirmation class
in the Rewick Board Room.

At 10:15 AM choir practice is in the Sanctuary.
All voices are welcomed.

At 10:45 AM grades 6-12
meet in the Youth Room for Sunday School.

At 11:45 AM the youth make the meal or
parents bring in a meal.

What else are the youth/parents involved in?

We start the school year with the Chili Sale in September in which all families are encouraged to participate. All monies earned go into the Mission Fund. Our other big fundraisers are the Shrove Tuesday dinner and auction, and
the parking of cars for the Punahou school carnival.

We have opportunities to help the community by making sandwiches for KauKau Wagon (8 times a year), and we collect and put together school supplies for Kuhio School.

For our church we participate in the Christmas Drive-thru, pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, help with the Thanksgiving food drive, gathering of White Gifts, usher for the Messiah, help with the Over 80’s party and Palm Sunday brunch, help the children on Advent, decorate the cross the day before Easter and we are responsible for the 6 AM Easter sunrise service.

We schedule the YOTM! activities
on Sundays from 9:00 AM to 11:45 AM.

Of course we want you to stay for lunch, talk and
make friends.

The Council of Central Union Church is made up of 23 elected members of the Congregation - 7 Officers of the Church (Council Chair, Council Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Deacons Chair, Deaconesses Chair, Preschool Chair),
16 members-at-large, and our Senior Minister.

All corporate powers of Central Union are vested in
the Church Council which has the, “general charge of the affairs, programs, funds, and property of the Church”
as provided in our By-Laws.

The Church Council is comprised of 7 standing committees: Worship and Evangelism, Christian Education,
Administration and Finance, Program and Mission,
Nominations and Governance,
Personnel and Pastoral Relations, and Preschool.

These standing committees oversee the workings of our 18 ministries which are comprised of our Congregational members who work closely with our Church staff in carrying out the mission and activities of our Church.

The ministries under each committee include:

- Administration and Finance (Stewardship, Budget, Investment, Building and Grounds);

- Christian Education (Youth, Children, Adult);

- Preschool Ministry;

- Program and Mission (World Mission, Community, Conference and Association Representatives, Women’s League, Senior Services);

- Worship and Evangelism (Deaconesses, Deacons, Music, Ushers, Membership and Fellowship).

In addition the Congregation elects our Head Usher and Historian who are considered non-Council Officers of the Church. The Council is also responsible for hiring
the Church Comptroller.

Thursday Seminar

We will immerse ourselves in the Gospel of Mark,
the earliest of the gospels,

Dear Families,

On February 26 we move into the Season of Lent. Your children will be hearing stories from the Hebrew Scriptures (also known as the Old Testament). These stories are about promises from God to Noah and his family and to Abraham and Sarah as well as the promises spoken through the Psalms and by the prophet Jeremiah. The Season of Lent is 40 days long (not counting the Sundays, which are all considered “little Easters”).

On Palm/Passion Sunday, April 1, your children will bring home a “Holy Week Calendar” of readings and reflections which your family might do together.

Following Easter Sunday, April 8, we move into the Season of Easter. This season is 50 days long and the focus will be on Bible stories from the New Testament. Our group will explore stories in the gospels about Jesus’ appearances to the disciples after the Resurrection and the ways in which Jesus’ friends and followers shared the good news of the risen Christ. During the Easter seasons we will learn from Jesus’ teachings and the witness of the disciples how we too can live as a faithful community of people who share God’s way of love.

You might like to read these stories together at home: John 20:19-31, Luke 24:36b-48, John 10:11-18, Acts 8:26-40, John 15:9-17, and Acts 1:15-17, 21-26. Reading the Bible together suggests that these stories are important to you.

We celebrate Pentecost Sunday on May 27, marking the end of the Season of Easter. This is a day to celebrate the Spirit of God and the growth of the Christian community.

On Sundays March 25, April 22 and May 13, the preschool through fifth grade children will all gather in the Children’s Center for a learning session with the youth and George and Bridget Scott.

We will be praying for each child in our group during these seasons. We ask that your family also include those of us who are involved in teaching in your prayers as we prepare for and lead the sessions each week. May these Lenten and Easter seasons be times of spiritual nurture and growth for all of us!

Our Beliefs

We believe in the triune God: Creator, resurrected Christ, the sole Head of the church, and the Holy Spirit, who guides and brings about the creative and redemptive work of God in the world.

We believe that each person is unique and valuable. It is the will of God that every person belong to a family of faith where they have a strong sense of being valued and loved.

We believe that each person is on a spiritual journey and that each of us is at a different stage of that journey.

We believe that the persistent search for God produces an authentic relationship with God, engendering love, strengthening faith, dissolving guilt, and giving life purpose and direction.

We believe that all of the baptized 'belong body and soul to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.' No matter who – no matter what – no matter where we are on life's journey – notwithstanding race, gender, sexual orientation, class or creed – we all belong to God and to one worldwide community of faith. All persons baptized – past, present and future – are connected to each other and to God through the sacrament of baptism. We baptize during worship when the community is present because baptism includes the community's promise of 'love, support and care' for the baptized – and we promise that we won't take it back – no matter where your journey leads you.

We believe that all people of faith are invited to join Christ at Christ's table for the sacrament of Communion. Just as many grains of wheat are gathered to make one loaf of bread and many grapes are gathered to make one cup of wine, we, the many people of God, are made one in the body of Christ, the church. The breaking of bread and the pouring of wine reminds us of the costliness of Christ's sacrifice and the discipleship to which we are all called. In the breaking of bread, we remember and celebrate Christ's presence among us along with a 'cloud of witnesses' – our ancestors, family and friends who have gone before us. It is a great mystery; we claim it by faith.

We believe the UCC is called to be a united and uniting church. "That they may all be one." (John 17:21) "In essentials–unity, in nonessentials–diversity, in all things–charity," These UCC mottos survive because they touch core values deep within us. The UCC has no rigid formulation of doctrine or attachment to creeds or structures. Its overarching creed is love. UCC pastors and teachers are known for their commitment to excellence in theological preparation, interpretation of the scripture and justice advocacy. Even so, love and unity in the midst of our diversity are our greatest assets.

We believe that God calls us to be servants in the service of others and to be good stewards of the earth's resources. 'To believe is to care; to care is to do.'

We believe that the UCC is called to be a prophetic church. As in the tradition of the prophets and apostles, God calls the church to speak truth to power, liberate the oppressed, care for the poor and comfort the afflicted.

We believe in the power of peace, and work for nonviolent solutions to local, national, and international problems.

We are a people of possibility. In the UCC, members, congregations and structures have the breathing room to explore and to hear ... for after all, God is still speaking, ...
