Boy Scout Troop 777 is on the CUC Campus.

Troop 777 invites boys from Central Union Church,
ages 11 and older to join them.

The troop meets every Friday night
from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the Youth Room.

All you and your parents have to do is
come to a meeting on a Friday Night.

Parents must come to the first meeting.

They will tell you what is required to be a Boy Scout.

UCC Special Mission Offerings

Strengthen the Church Offering

One of the events underwritten by the Strengthen the Church Offering is the National Youth Event which will be held in Lafayette, Indiana from July 10-13, 2012 at Purdue University.

This conference brings together thousands of youth from all over the United Church of Christ to be encountered by God and to engage in social and human justice issues. Youth who have gone to these events return to their churches energized and inspired. This year Sarah Tyler from Central Union Church will be part of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ’s delegation to the National Youth Event.

Senior Minister Search

The Council was fortunate to have many people interested in serving on this committee and we thank you all. After due consideration of the qualities needed to serve and to ensure a broad cross-section of our church community, the Council has selected the members of the Senior Minister Search Committee. They are: Evelyn Hao, Scott Ballentyne, John Jacobson, Kent Reinker, Gregory Sato, Francis Sapigao, Bert Turner, Elspeth Kerr, Eloise Lee, Jane Nagel, May Oshiro and Ruth Stepulis. I have appointed Evelyn Hao to chair this committee.

This committee has a long road ahead. Please give them your support.

As part of this minister search process, we will utilize the Spire, our website, and the Sunday bulletin to get information out to our Congregation. Updates will be given monthly in our Spire so please look out for them. We also plan to utilize the bulletin board located in the hallway to the administration building. If you have any questions regarding this process, please first look to these forms of information. Please also feel free to contact members of the Church Council, the search committee, or write in care of the Church Council Chairperson.

Pastor's Paragraph

I am into my third month as your interim pastor. Central Union Church has been blessed with physical assets and needs to take care of them. The buildings and grounds are in constant need of maintenance and like most churches, deferred maintenance issues can plague the church. Repair and maintenance of facilities do cost. Remember the church in your giving. The church needs you.

The last Sunday in May is called Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. It is the fiftieth day after Easter. On Pentecost we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to those gathered in Jerusalem following Jesus’ resurrection. The color for Pentecost is red. I invite you to wear something red when you come to worship.

When I accepted the call to be your interim minister, it was with one condition, namely that I be given three weeks’ vacation, from May 28 - June 18. On the evening of Pentecost Sunday, Sandra and I will leave for Chicago to attend our grandson’s graduation from high school. That will be followed by a cruise to destinations still unknown (a fiftieth anniversary gift from our oldest son). We shall be back on duty in mid-June.

What We Do

The CUC Thrift Shop is the major source of our funding.

Every Wednesday and Saturday you will find cheerful and helpful volunteers keeping the Thrift Shop running successfully.

Each Second Saturday of the month the Executive Board meets to maintain a high quality operation.

Every May and December General Membership meetings of inspiration, education, fun, fellowship and business are held and open to all.

Who are we?

We are the youth of Central Union Church.

We consist of all young people between grades 6 thru 12.

We are a loving and accepting group that celebrates
a diverse range of young people.

What do we do in the church service?

We meet each Sunday and attend the 9 AM service.

In this service grades 6 and 7 are acolytes (light the candles) and grades 8-12 are Worship People.

A Worship Person does the call for the offering and
offers the prayer to bless the gifts given.

All others are assigned teams to collect offering.

Our older youth are given the opportunity to read scriptures on the first Sunday of each month.

Once a month we sing at the 9:00 AM service.

When do we meet?

We meet every Sunday unless otherwise noted.

At 9:15 AM the 8th graders go to Confirmation class
in the Rewick Board Room.

At 10:15 AM choir practice is in the Sanctuary.
All voices are welcomed.

At 10:45 AM grades 6-12
meet in the Youth Room for Sunday School.

At 11:45 AM the youth make the meal or
parents bring in a meal.

What else are the youth/parents involved in?

We start the school year with the Chili Sale in September in which all families are encouraged to participate. All monies earned go into the Mission Fund. Our other big fundraisers are the Shrove Tuesday dinner and auction, and
the parking of cars for the Punahou school carnival.

We have opportunities to help the community by making sandwiches for KauKau Wagon (8 times a year), and we collect and put together school supplies for Kuhio School.

For our church we participate in the Christmas Drive-thru, pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, help with the Thanksgiving food drive, gathering of White Gifts, usher for the Messiah, help with the Over 80’s party and Palm Sunday brunch, help the children on Advent, decorate the cross the day before Easter and we are responsible for the 6 AM Easter sunrise service.

We schedule the YOTM! activities
on Sundays from 9:00 AM to 11:45 AM.

Of course we want you to stay for lunch, talk and

The Council of Central Union Church is made up of 23 elected members of the Congregation - 7 Officers of the Church (Council Chair, Council Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Deacons Chair, Deaconesses Chair, Preschool Chair),
16 members-at-large, and our Senior Minister.

All corporate powers of Central Union are vested in
the Church Council which has the, “general charge of the affairs, programs, funds, and property of the Church”
as provided in our By-Laws.

The Church Council is comprised of 7 standing committees: Worship and Evangelism, Christian Education,
Administration and Finance, Program and Mission,
Nominations and Governance,
Personnel and Pastoral Relations, and Preschool.

These standing committees oversee the workings of our 18 ministries which are comprised of our Congregational members who work closely with our Church staff in carrying out the mission and activities of our Church.

The ministries under each committee include:

- Administration and Finance (Stewardship, Budget, Investment, Building and Grounds);

- Christian Education (Youth, Children, Adult);

- Preschool Ministry;

- Program and Mission (World Mission, Community, Conference and Association Representatives, Women’s League, Senior Services);

- Worship and Evangelism (Deaconesses, Deacons, Music, Ushers, Membership and Fellowship).

In addition the Congregation elects our Head Usher and Historian who are considered non-Council Officers of the Church. The Council is also responsible for hiring
the Church Comptroller.

Dear Families,

June 3^rd we move into the Season after Pentecost in the church year. It is the longest season of the year, running through the summer and fall until we again reach the season of Advent. It is a time for exploring the work of God’s Spirit, alive in us and in the world. Where do you see signs of God’s presence in your life? How might you help your child to discover a sense of God’s presence?

June 3^rd will also mark the beginning of our summer program. Because the summer is a time for many to travel, we often have smaller classes. We also like to give our Sunday School teachers that teach during the school year a rest if they so desire. Therefore, we combine the Kindergarten through fifth grade together and have them meet in the Children’s Ministry room. The preschool continues to meet in their same classroom, Room 11.

Our theme for the summer sessions will be “Stories from the Past”. Starting in June, we will explore the story of Isaiah’s call to be a prophet and stories from the first book of Samuel about David. We will also hear several stories about Jesus and the disciples.

Six of the sessions in July and August will focus on the letter to the Ephesians. During this time the children will learn about the first Christians, who gathered in house churches to learn how to be a community living in God’s way. Through the stories of the early church, children will have an opportunity to learn more about their own faith community.

At home, you might want to consider reading the newspaper together and talking about the things that are happening here in Honolulu, in our state, in our country and in the world. You might consider this question: In what ways is our family living out God’s ways of love, hope and compassion?

We will be praying for your children and ask that you pray for us as we explore the work of God’s Spirit in years past and today.

We believe in the triune God: Creator, resurrected Christ, the sole Head of the church, and the Holy Spirit, who guides and brings about the creative and redemptive work of God in the world.

We believe that each person is unique and valuable. It is the will of God that every person belong to a family of faith where they have a strong sense of being valued and loved.

We believe that each person is on a spiritual journey and that each of us is at a different stage of that journey.

We believe that the persistent search for God produces an authentic relationship with God, engendering love, strengthening faith, dissolving guilt, and giving life purpose and direction.

We believe that all of the baptized 'belong body and soul to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.' No matter who – no matter what – no matter where we are on life's journey – notwithstanding race, gender, sexual orientation, class or creed – we all belong to God and to one worldwide community of faith. All persons baptized – past, present and future – are connected to each other and to God through the sacrament of baptism. We baptize during worship when the community is present because baptism includes the community's promise of 'love, support and care' for the baptized – and we promise that we won't take it back – no matter where your journey leads you.

We believe that all people of faith are invited to join Christ at Christ's table for the sacrament of Communion. Just as many grains of wheat are gathered to make one loaf of bread and many grapes are gathered to make one cup of wine, we, the many people of God, are made one in the body of Christ, the church. The breaking of bread and the pouring of wine reminds us of the costliness of Christ's sacrifice and the discipleship to which we are all called. In the breaking of bread, we remember and celebrate Christ's presence among us along with a 'cloud of witnesses' – our ancestors, family and friends who have gone before us. It is a great mystery; we claim it by faith.

We believe the UCC is called to be a united and uniting church. "That they may all be one." (John 17:21) "In essentials–unity, in nonessentials–diversity, in all things–charity," These UCC mottos survive because they touch core values deep within us. The UCC has no rigid formulation of doctrine or attachment to creeds or structures. Its overarching creed is love. UCC pastors and teachers are known for their commitment to excellence in theological preparation, interpretation of the scripture and justice advocacy. Even so, love and unity in the midst of our diversity are our greatest assets.

We believe that God calls us to be servants in the service of others and to be good stewards of the earth's resources. 'To believe is to care; to care is to do.'

We believe that the UCC is called to be a prophetic church. As in the tradition of the prophets and apostles, God calls the church to speak truth to power, liberate the oppressed, care for the poor and comfort the afflicted.

We believe in the power of peace, and work for nonviolent solutions to local, national, and international problems.

We are a people of possibility. In the UCC, members, congregations and structures have the breathing room to explore and to hear ... for after all, God is still speaking, ...
