Central Union Church and Central Union Church Preschool and Kindergarten is proud to announce that Group 70 International received the 2013 Kukulu Hale Award, for the Central Union Church Preschool Project on Friday, May 3, 2013. We are elated that our Preschool Project was one of the projects receiving such a prestigious award.

The project team, Central Union Church, Central Union Church Preschool, the Capital Campaign Committee, Group 70 International, Ralph S. Inouye and Bowers and Kubota made this all possible.

Director of Children’s Ministries (Part Time)

Seeking an organized, motivated, self-starter
who will work under the direction of Rev. Gloria Imamura
to coordinate the Sunday School program
for children in preschool through the fifth grade.

Job responsibilities include
selecting curriculum for Sunday School,
providing the training for the teachers,
supervising the Sunday School ministry and
activities related to Children’s Ministry, and
attending monthly meetings with
the Children’s Ministry of the Christian Education Committee.

This is a part time (less than 20 hours per week) position.

Summer Sunday School

Children’s Ministry

is in the process of setting up a schedule
for teaching the Sunday School hour
during the summer months.

Our summer Sunday School begins
the first Sunday in June and
continues until mid-September,
when the classes that follow the school year begin again.

We ask that volunteers have
a love for children and the Lord and
are willing to go through a background check.

Searching for Preschool Founding Mothers

HELP NEEDED!

The names of the Founding Mothers of
the Central Union Church Preschool.

In 1928, the Central Union Church Preschool was founded by Catharine P. Field and a group of mothers.

It would be nice to know if anyone possibly remembers if
their great-grandmother, grandmother, or aunt
might have been one of the group.

Phase 1 of rebuilding the preschool (since the fire)
is nearing completion and it would helpful to learn
who these visionary women were.

Visiting and Caring

Jesus called in homes to understand people’s needs and
to communicate his concern and caring.

“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you should love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,
if you have love for one another. (John 13:34-35)”

Visiting is one way to show concern and caring
for our members and friends.

Central Union Church addresses visiting and caring in numerous ways. Chaplain Bill Crockett is our Chaplain of Visitation. Our ordained ministers also participate in visitation, but cannot perform the entire visitation required of our large congregation without assistance from the lay leaders of the church. The Deacons and Deaconesses provide an invaluable service to our members and friends requiring visitation. Reaching into the community, one example of an ongoing visitation program is our Prison Ministry which ministers to incarcerated individuals. In addition to these programs Ruth Stepulis acts as referral person to ministers, lay leadership and members and friends.

Report from the Council Chair

As the Council prepares to embark on a new year of service, I extend my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to those, both volunteers and staff, who continuously strive to assure that our members and friends are embraced in the true meaning of Christian love. At times we get lost in our individual interests, concerns and priorities in relation to the issues facing CUC. We should always remember that we are here to serve Christ and continuously strive to make Central Union Church a wonderful place to be in our service to Christ. When in doubt, we should look to our Lord for guidance and direction.

At the annual Council retreat on June 1 an advisory committee will be launched to study and review our current bylaws. We have had over four years’ experience with our new bylaws and it is timely to conduct a review of their effectiveness in meeting the needs of Central Union Church. The members of the committee include Roger Abbey (Council Vice Chair), Carl Schlack (Nominations and Governance Chair), Miguel Asuncion (Administrator), Alice Taum (Preschool Committee and Christian Education Committee member) and Marion Lyman-Mersereau (long time Congregation member and ethics instructor at Punahou School).
